Over the years, the issue of generational curses has been quite serious. People who face problems and difficulties trace it to someone who cursed them or some evil covenant of their ancestors. Therefore, they feel the need to break such curses even after believing in the Lord Jesus. This is a very crucial and sensitive issue which if not understood, Satan can take advantage of you with it. This topic divides Christians today as we have some who believe it exists and there is a need to pray even after giving your life to Christ on the other hand, we have those who believe it doesn’t exist because we are a new creation in Christ. Well at the end of this teaching you will know what side to be on.
WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?
It is crucial that we understand the truth about curses and blessings. The truth is, all blessings and curses come from God Almighty! This is not popular in Christian teaching today but it is the truth. It is a shell shocker yes, but it is the truth. Take a look at these scriptures:
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God…15 However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: (Deuteronomy 28: 1,2 and 15).
33 The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked,
but he blesses the home of the righteous (Proverbs 3:33).
If you will not hear, and if you will not take it to heart, to give glory to My name, “says the Lord of hosts, “I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have cursed them already, because you do not take it to heart (Malachi 2:2).
There are so many scriptures that tell us this even the story of Eli the priest and his generation. One may ask ‘why’, Why would God curse someone? Well, it’s simple. God is good and humans are wicked. When people commit wickedness, the curse of the Lord comes upon them. Sin attracts the curse of God. What Satan does is to tempt us to sin so that God can release His curses. In the case of generational curses, it is an act of God’s judgement against wicked men. Let’s take Africa for example, there are some wicked practices our ancestors engaged in that aroused the anger of God, therefore He decided to visit the generation of such people with the sword of His judgment. What I’m saying is very scriptural.
6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation (Exodus 34:6-7).”
Generational curses and blessings come from God.
HOW IT IS BROKEN
Contrary to what many Christians think, it is not broken by prayer. The fact that you spoke words don’t mean that it is broken. The curse of God can only be overturned by God himself and He doesn’t cancel curses simply because He feels like it. We must understand the order and the process of God. Some people say if Adam had said sorry instead of blaming Eve things wouldn’t be like they are today. Sorry, but spiritual things don’t work like that. Sin cannot be cured by I’m sorry. Apologies don’t wipe off sin or the curses that it attracts. The justice of God doesn’t accept apologies. It is a polite thing to do but we are dealing with something more than mere politeness or etiquette. The curse of God must be served. The just Judge must punish sin. He is not trying His best to be just. That is who He is. People have made God look like one trying His best to keep His word or trying not to lie because if He lies, He won’t be God anymore. That is not true. He hates lies. He refuses to not keep His word. That’s the kind of person God is. Remember what I said earlier that the curse of God must be served. Someone must serve that punishment. This is where Jesus comes in. He served our punishment. He became a curse for us. He took our place. Our sins were laid on Him.
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith (Galatians 3:13).
Since Jesus has served our curse for us, the curse has been broken. In fact, we now have a new lineage. It is the lineage of Abraham. We are of the seed of Abraham by faith in the Son of God, Jesus. This is why prayer meetings for breaking generational cures is an eye sore to heaven. It is ignorance. Jesus did it for us. Faith in Christ Jesus is what breaks curses. God doesn’t need your contribution. The gentiles used to serve other Gods and engage in all kinds of abominable practices, yet all Paul did was to preach the gospel, the power of God, to them. He never conducted any deliverance service. So where did we get all these ideas from? Clearly they are not scriptural. Listen, it is the gospel that sets one free. All we are to do is to believe. The problem is people say to themselves, “It is too easy, it can’t be true”. That mentality will get you nowhere with God.
SET FREE TO STAY FREE
It is important to understand that because we have been set free, we must stay free. We must avoid the wickedness of our past and practice the righteousness that comes from God. This is why believing and obeying the word of God is so important. Sometimes Christians, after coming into Christ, still hold on to the practices of their idolatrous clan. They still celebrate abominable festivals. Why should a Christian be pouring libation? Why should such a one accept chieftaincy title which has an immoral origin? Be careful of the practices of your people. Let me show you something interesting:
31 “Therefore, you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. 33 Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? 34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation (Matthew 23:31-36).
I want you to notice something here. Jesus was talking to the people of his time. Abel and all the prophets down to Zachariah were not alive in their time. They weren’t the ones who killed them, it was their fathers (ancestors) who killed them but, they received judgment for the blood of the prophets. Why? They did not depart from the wicked practices of their fathers. They continued in the ways of their fathers therefore they tapped into the judgment that was activated by their fathers’ sins. They were judged as if they killed the prophets. Be careful. Make sure you are not practicing any tradition or customs of devils. Whatever is not scriptural please let go of it if you want peace in your life and home.
Generational curses are broken by the blood of the lamb and by repentance from dead works. Anybody who doesn’t emphasize these things but is telling you to pay money or bring an offering is a servant of Satan. Anybody blaming another person as the source of your problems is a minister of Satan. Be warned.
